Musicians Are Athletes App

I’m Jona Beczkiewicz, a classically trained violinist, licensed massage therapist, corrective exercise specialist, and movement specialist who helps musicians reduce pain and build physical sustainability.

After undergoing ulnar nerve surgery in both elbows during music school, I began to understand how little physical education musicians receive despite the demands placed on our bodies.

For more than 15 years, I’ve worked with musicians at all stages of their careers to reduce pain, restore balance, and build sustainable movement habits that support practice, performance, and longevity. This program reflects that work — practical tools designed to help musicians feel better while doing what they love.

Musicians Are Athletes was created to share practical tools that support real practice, performance, and long-term playing.

Why Musicians Are Athletes

Musicians perform physically demanding repetitive work under pressure, yet most are never taught how to prepare, adapt, or recover their bodies.

Musicians often experience:

  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Wrist, forearm, or hand fatigue
  • Back pain from long rehearsals
  • Feeling tight, heavy, or exhausted while playing

Pain and fatigue may be common in music, but they are not inevitable.

A Different Way to Think About Posture and Pain

• Posture isn’t “sitting up straight”
• Stretching alone doesn’t solve overuse
• Forcing alignment increases fatigue
• Musicians perform athletic-level physical tasks
• Athletes train movement, support, and recovery
• Musicians deserve the same approach

Musicians repeat very specific movement patterns on their instruments, often for hours in a session. Over time, the body adapts to these patterns by shortening, stiffening, or overworking certain tissues, while other parts cease to contribute.

This imbalance is one of the primary drivers of repetitive playing strain. A key part of reducing strain is reversing those patterns.

That doesn’t mean doing the opposite technique. It means restoring movement options
that get lost when the same actions are repeated over and over.

With Musicians Are Athletes, movement and posture are taught as skills— including how to hold positions with support, ease, and awareness rather than force.
